Aydan Peterson
Q: What are your hobbies? A: My hobbies are obviously sailing. I also really like art. Q: What are some of your other sports? A: My other sports are track, swim, and then I’ll be doing my first year of cross country. Q: What do you do in the winter? A: In the winter I focus on my school work and attend Sunday school. Q: How have the Juniors prepared you for your future outside of sailing and with sailing? A: I think the juniors program has made me a more confident and independent individual because over the years they have given me more and more responsibilities. I have learned good time management from waking up super early and having to get myself, my boat, and another person ready. I think sailing also teaches people how to be resourceful when you may not have all the resources you need out on the water. I’ve also learned how to work as a team and help others even when it may not benefit you directly such as helping other people load up after a regatta. Q: What are your plans beyond Juniors? A: I plan to on attending a university and obtaining my bachelor's degree after high school for architecture and I hope I am able to sail a whole bunch too. Q: What advice would you give a newly starting Junior? A: Advice I’d give to a newly starting junior would have to be, come in with an open mind and don’t be scared to fail and try things that may seem scary because those fears will hold you back from obtaining your goals. And also be nice to the instructors there super cool and give up a lot of their time to be down there and teach. Q: What advice would you give to a sailor who is struggling in big wind? A: If you are a sailor struggling with big wind I’d say first and foremost make sure controls immediately get tightened up when the wind sets in. Another thing is also to try to stay positive and calm because panicking is never good for you or your partner. Make sure you luff going upwind and if sailing a 420 don’t be scared to get out on the wire it helps so much. Make sure when going downwind you sail more on a reach because then there won’t be as many unpredicted gybes. |
