Beginners This week the beginners class was a huge success! Students are beginning to get the basic concepts of sailing. On Monday, the students undertook the hotdog course which consists of a beam reach course with tacking and gybing. Classes on Wednesday were cancelled due to the Kaszube cup but on Friday, we were able to advance to a triangle course. This not only allowed sailors to practice sailing on a beam reach, but also a broad reach and close haul. It tested their knowledge of the different reaches as well as how to tell where the wind is coming from. We are hoping by sometime in the next few lessons we can begin a windward leeward course!
Intermediates We are very happy to say that the intermediate class this summer is thriving and accelerating through the course! With a faster pace, we are able to get through more material which means more practice. We began the week with a triangle course that includes a beam reach, broad reach, and close haul as well as tacking and gybing. The focus was sail trim on each reach and mark roundings. Friday proved to be very windy. We attempted to get some students out on the trap, but then the wind proved to be even too windy for them! As a result, the instructors sailed one 420 while trapping to have students visually observe the correct stance and execution of trapping. Next week we hope to begin a windward leeward course as well as introducing spins.
Racing Tactics The Racing Class had a pretty intense and exciting week. They all participated in our annual Kaszube Cup Race and came out very successful. On Thursday, per tradition, the racing class had their fun day. We began the morning by sailing to the bell bouy and proceeded to eat lunch on the beach and partake in many capsizes and sailing extravaganzas. We hope that next week we can work on faster spinnaker flying and dousing and how to choose the favored side of the course.
